Sunset Beach, NC

Here are some photos of beautiful Sunset Beach.
The beach is very long and gradually sloped.  This means you can walk out forever and never get your shoulders wet.  At low tide there is a huge beach perfect for kids to play games and build castles.
It's also great for long walks at sunset or sunrise.  You can also usually find fabulous shells.
This is one of our favorite dive restaurants.  Its on the Inter-Coastal Waterway, right over the water.  I highly recommend the Grouper Special or Buffalo Shrimp.
This is the back of my parents' house.  It has a huge backyard, right on the golf course, and a large porch with outdoor fireplace.

This is where we will have dinner most nights (and probably other meals) and there is more than enough room for all 18 of us!

(Have I mentioned how excited I am yet?)

  1. Woah! x.x bright yellow comment button is hard to see. How exciting! I'm stoked for this. Can I go snorkeling? I love snorkeling.

  2. Yeah, I gotta figure out how to change that color. I don't like it!

You can definitely go snorkeling. There are always lots of fish, sand crabs, sand dollars, and other goodies. The sand is like powdered sugar, it squeaks when you walk it's so fine.

  3. I love investigating tide pools, are there many? I could do research!

  4. Not tide pools so much, but there is lots of swampy land with fun critters, like alligators. There is also a great aquarium (or so I'm told) in Myrtle Beach. I'll posts some links for that later.

  5. Hold on, Lizzy... Sunset Beach does not have tide pools, but there are miles of salt marshes. Snorkeling is not great, in fact I've never seen anyone do it... But, kayaking in the salt marshes is supposed to be very good. I'll look into how to cast for shrimp with nets. And crabbing is supposed to be pretty good.
Our next island up, Ocean Isle Beach, has a wonderful ocean life museum. I don't think we'll have any turtles hatching yet in July, but Sunset Beach is a big nesting site for the Loggerheads. You can walk the beach in the early mornings looking for tracks that the turtles have made the night before to lay their eggs.

  6. Great news... the full moon happens on the 16th. That means we will have several evenings prior to that for dinners at the beach where we watch the sunset and then see the moon come up. You're probably wondering how you can watch the sunset when visiting the Atlantic??? Look at a map of North Carolina. There is a small part of the coastline that cuts in and faces south. That's us. Sunset Beach faces south and thus gets the sunrise and sunset in full view without turning your chair. Pretty cool.
